Aims & History

Monash University's Host Scheme is a student run program that has been in existence since 1974, with the aim of integrating students into the university lifestyle. The program focuses on two main aspects, building a solid social and support network, and establishing strong links to the university for students who may be experiencing difficulties. Building this social and support network is achieved by running special functions or activities based on teamwork and co-operation.

These involve the participation in a number of three day camps, area based functions, park day and the orientation week carnival. All of which allow the newly enrolled students the opportunity to meet and socialise with other first year students, as well as ask questions of the more experienced students - who facilitate the activities - about the university, their course, or the extra-curricular opportunities that are available to them. Creating student support links is achieved by introducing students to all the facilities that Monash has available.

The Monash Student Association (MSA) is the overarching body which represents these students, and includes services such as student rights, welfare, and transport; as well as the academic support that can be provided by individual faculties and their associated societies. The University also offers chaplaincy, counseling and welfare services, catering for the needs of our extremely diverse student population.

Host scheme has built connections with these essential services over the years in order to provide new students with the most positive transitionary experience possible and ensure that new students are confident and comfortable as they enter university life.

Camps

As part of this student-run program, Host Scheme offers a number of 3-day camps at the spectacular Lord Somers Campsite. Along with 120 new students just like yourself, you will be involved in a wild night of trivia followed by a themed night of fun and frivolity.

In your spare time, you can relax in the friendly coastal environment, join in the many activities made available or swim with the resident wild dolphins at the beach. This non-stop action introduction into university life helps to eliminate any possibility of a potentially daunting transition into the Monash Clayton community.

Host Scheme Functions are a very important element of the Host Scheme program. Held in the week prior to O-week every year, Host Scheme functions provide new students with an opportunity to meet other new students prior to even their first day on campus.

Functions are a fun, inexpensive and accessible way of meeting new people, and range from things like BBQs, bowling, a day at the beach, coffee and cake, pool party, and many more things fun and social.
