About
Wom*n's & 2009
Monash Wom*n's Department is looking forward to an active and exciting 2009. We encourage new students to get involved with the activities and events we run throughout the year, as well as visiting our Wom*n's Room, on the 1st floor of the Campus Centre (up the stairs across from Coffee HQ, and down the corridor to the right of the Information desk).
All women are welcome — we provide free tampons, condoms, coffee and tea, as well as couches, information on Wom*n's services, issues and upcoming events, and much more! It is a safe space for women, and is also where we hold Wom*n's Affairs Collective meetings, as well as a fortnightly feminist reading group and an ethno-cultural women's group.
We also run Thursdays In Black, feminist movie nights, and "crafternoons".
So come, get involved and enjoy your student space!
Wom*n's Affairs Collective
Meetings are held weekly on Mondays at in the Wom*n's Room. Voting members of the collective are elected during student election in September. However, we encourage all women to come to meetings and have your say, and find out how your department runs.
Feminist Reading Group / Ethno-Cultural Women's Group
Both groups welcome all women, and hope to promote lively and informal discussion surrounding issues. The Feminist Reading Group works with a different text each session(from articles on websites to excerpts from published works). We meet fortnightly, on Wednesdays from 12-1pm. However, this time may be changed, so keep up-to-date via the Wom*n's e-Bulletin, or from the noticeboard in the Wom*n's Room.
The Ethno-Cultural Women's Group works around whatever attendees raise within the meeting; again, discussion is informal and aims to raise issues that unfortunately can be overlooked, or are just not raised often enough. Come along on Wednesdays, 1-2pm, and share your thoughts and ideas.
Thursdays In Black
Thursdays In Black is part of an international movement to demand a world without rape and violence. Wearing black on Thursdays is a way of protesting against domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, incest, murder, female infanticide, genital mutilation, sexual harassment, discrimination and sex trafficking. We hope to promote this widely in 2009, and will be having free lunches and guest speakers to help raise awareness. Information will be passed on via the e-bulletin and displayed in the Wom*n's Room.
Getting in Touch
Information on other activities and events will be sent out over the Wom*n's e-bulletin, on roughly a weekly basis. Please sign up by emailing either Stephanie, or Madeline. Any other questions, comments or Women's-related items can be passed onto us at these addresses, also, or by dropping by our office, next to the Wom*n's Room. We'd love to speak with you.
