Climate in Crisis

The United Nations International Panel for Climate Changes has predicted that due to human activities over the next 50 years global temperatures will significantly rise causing sea level rising, disruption of rainfall patterns and an increase in extreme weather events. The global effects of the changes will include flooding of coastal regions, disruption of fresh water and food supplies, increased range of tropical disease such as malaria and massive reductions in biodiversity, equating to a global humanitarian and environmental disaster.

MCCG Goals

Our long term goal is to make the operation of Monash University Climate neutral. To achieve this we are working towards the following targets:

1. 20% reduction in electricity use by 2010. This will not only reduce Monash’s emissions but will also save Monash money.

2. 40% of energy purchased from the grid being green energy by 2010, adopting a target of 100% by 2020.

3. 20% of Monash’s electricity requirements source from on-site renewable electricity generation, such as solar and wind by 2020.

Campus Clean energy campaign:

On Sunday 10 April, the National Union of Students (NUS) passed a resolution on behalf of 600,000 university students calling on their universities to adopt a clean energy policy. The MCCG is working with this national campaign to reduce Monash's impact on the climate.
