The MSA Queer Department functions as a safe and supportive space for all queer students on campus. This includes any student who does not identify as being straight in sexual orientation, trans students and students who are questioning their sexuality and/or gender identity. It exists to provide a discussion space, a social network, and to raise awareness about the issues queer students live with both on and off campus.

1. The Monash Queer Department
The Queer Department aims to supply something for every queer student on campus, whether it be an opportunity to make new friends, participate in social activities, activism, someone to talk things over with or just get involved in the queer community here at Monash and in the wider world. However you’d like to be a part of the Queer Collective, from those who visit the Lounge every day to those who read the news bulletins once a year, we’re glad to have you on board!

2. The Queer Lounge
A safe, autonomous space for all queer students, the Lounge is a friendly and welcoming room on the first floor of Monash’s Campus Centre. Queer students congregate here for chats, to do homework, relax, listen to music, hold discussions and meetings, play cards, plan activism and awareness campaigns, sleep, and generally feel free to be themselves. The Lounge is open all day and always available to those who need it.
3. The Queer Office
Two doors down from the Lounge, the Queer Office is home to two Queer Officers who run the department, host meetings, organise events, and support the collective in any way they can. Along with the Queer Officers, the Queer Committee are elected to represent the Monash Queer Collective and have regular meetings to determine what happens in the Queer Department. If you ever need to get in contact with the Queer Officers, you can email us, ring the office or just stop by.
4. Weekly Meetings
At this time, we have no set times for the weekly meetings of Queer Action/Social Collective (which will be combined into one meeting time for the duration of Semester One) or the Queer Women's Netowork. Details of when these meetings are held will be updated later in the summer as the schedules of the Queer Officers become more apparent.
5. Activities
The Queer Department has many exciting activities on throughout the year, such as karaoke nights, glamorous awareness parties, pride marches, performance pieces, banner painting and general social gatherings. We sends out a regular email bulletin detailing upcoming activities; if you would like to be added, please notify a Queer Officer. Alternately, the bulletins are posted on the door of the Queer Office.
6. Queer Page in Lot’s Wife
We are always seeking new material to put in the student newspaper, Lot’s Wife, on the Queer Page. You’re welcome to write about the Queer Collective, the Queer Department, your experiences as a queer person, or submit poetry or prose in queer themes. If you’re an artist, we’d love to have you contribute some artwork, too.
7. Queer Students Online
If visiting the Lounge itself is a bit daunting, you can always have a look at the Online Queer Lounge www.quni.org . Feel free to introduce yourself there, talk to other queer students from various university campuses and make some new friends. It should be noted that the forum is not under the direction of the Queer Department. So we can't guarantee the content will not be offensive to some, but they have a group of moderators and administrators to submit any complaints to,or if you 're uncomfortable with that, you can e-mail the Queer Officers and we can liaise anonymously on your behalf.
